Bote-Cote Epoxy Resin
A low viscosity, high solids epoxy resin developed for modern wooden boat
building. It is the base material for all coatings, glues, and lamination
with synthetic fibres.
Timber Preservative Additive
(Timber Preservative Additive) is a thin liquid which reacts with Bote-Cote
to reduce its viscosity, enables it to penetrate more deeply into a timber
surface to carry the timber preservative into the timber. TPA is not a
solvent and does not evaporate, as such liquids can leave a porous layer
which would permit easy penetration of water.
Hardeners
A number of different hardeners may be used with Bote-Cote resin, having
different reactivities so as to cope with the wide variation of temperature
conditions under which Bote-Cote may be used. All are used at the same
ratio of 2:1, and are completely compatible so that they may be mixed
to obtain intermediate reactivities. Cure rates quoted can be substantially
affected by temperature fluctuations and other factors, and therefore
should be taken as a guide only.
FastHardener:
For use in southern Australian climates and in winters, has a pot life
of 45 minutes and a thin film set time of 5-6 hours at 14-16 deg.C.
Can be used at temperatures as low as 8 deg.C.
Standard
Hardener:
Suitable for warmer conditions and southern summers, has a pot life
of 45 minutes and a thin film set time of 5-6 hours at 20-22 deg.C.
Tropical
Hardener:
For hot climates such as northern Australia where temperatures rarely
fall below 30 deg.C. and there is consistently high humidity. Has a
pot life of 45 minutes and a thin film set time of 4-5 hours at 30 deg.C.
Non-yellowing
Hardener:
A non yellowing and highly UV retarded hardener designed for coating
exterior timbers that are to be clear finished.
Bote-Cote Hardeners
are free of the side reaction known as Amine Blush. Bote-Cote can therefore
be used uder any conditions of humidity and temperature above 8 deg.C.
Accelerator Accelerator:
This additive accelerates the cure of any Bote-Cote formulation. 2%
doubles the reactivity (half the pot life), 4% makes it react 4 times
as fast.
Bote-Cote Epoxy Fillers Powder fillers are added to Bote-Cote epoxy
to thicken it for use as a gap filling glue, or as a putty for filling,
fairing, or filletting applications. They are ready to use, and are
mixed with liquid Bote-Cote until the desired viscosity is obtained
for the purpose in hand. All Bote-Cote fillers consist of non-organic
materials to avoid temperature sensitivity and to prevent wicking of
moisture into the cured epoxy, and can be used with equal safety below
the water line or on an exposed deck. They are formulated to minimise
dust rising, and so reduce inhalation by users.
High Strength
Filler:
A high density glass fibre and particle filler for maximum strength
glueing applications such as catamaran beams, mast bulkheads, load carrying
transoms, etc.
Glue Filler:
A low cost blended filler used for most glueing applications and also
for making all fillets.
Fairing
Filler:
A low density, easily sanded microsphere based filler, which spreads
like cream to a perfect feather edge. Used for filling and fairing.
Purbond
Purbond is a single pack moisture curing polyurethane adhesive developed
by BoatCraft as an easy to use gap filling adhesive. It is ideal for
all general joinery, and especially for strip planked construction using
the Quickstrip method, and is completely compatible with the Bote Cote
Epoxy System. Purbond expands as it sets, which gives it its useful
gap filling properties. However in rather open joints, such as bulkhead
to hull joints, the glue can expand out of the joint leaving it with
insufficient strength. For all open joints, epoxy is preferred. Purbond
is fast setting, clamps can be removed generally within 1 to 2 hours.
Joints can be cleaned up with normal tools, as Purbond does not blunt
edge tools in the way epoxy does.
Bote-Cote Ancillary Products
There are many other products needed for building a wooden boat with
Bote-Cote Epoxy, and most of these are available as ancillaries to the
Bote-Cote system.
Fibreglass:
Woven fabric and tapes are the general purpose laminating cloths in
weights from 120 gsm to 330 gsm. Knitted fabrics include Uniaxial (0
deg), Biaxial (0/90 deg), Double Bias (+/-45 deg), Triaxial (0/+45/-45
deg), and other fabrics in various weights. The high directionality
of these reinforcements greatly enhances the laminate strength, and
provides selective strengthening in line with predicted load factors
in a boat hull.
Sheathing:
Also known as Dynel, this is a woven synthetic fabric used for sheathing
timber boats for improved impact strength and water and abrasion resistance.
Peel Ply:
is a fine nylon fabric which can be rolled onto the surface
of a laminate to even out its resin content, and to provide a smooth
finished surface.
Hand Cleaner
and Barrier Cream:
is based on citrus oil and has an astonishing ability to remove partially
cured epoxy without damage to the skin. Use with Barrier Cream and surgical
gloves for optimum protection.
Bote-Cote
Dispensers:
Hand pumps are available for fitting to all Bote-Cote containers.. For
larger requirements a dispensing machine manufactured by J & B Products,
Florida, USA, is available.
Bote-Cote
Applicator Kit:
Consists of a squeegee for spreading Bote-Cote over large areas, and
two filletting paddles rounded at both ends with radii of 6 mm to 30
mm to aid filletting.
Epoxy Rollers:
Foam rollers especially designed to resist epoxy liquids and to give
maximum use life when coating or laminating.
FEATURES OF BOTE-COTE EPOXY SYSTEMS:
Easy to use 2:1 ratio, has
minimum toxicity
No amine blush
Protects against dry rot, reduces maintenance
Special UV-resistant hardener for clear finishes
Economical and available in a wide range of sizes
